Taco Bell is officially returning to the UAE after a 14-year hiatus, following a new exclusive development agreement signed by Americana Restaurants with Taco Bell UK and Europe, a subsidiary of Yum! Brands. The partnership aims to relaunch the popular US fast-food chain in the UAE before executing a phased expansion across other Gulf markets.
Mohamed Alabbar, chairman of Americana Restaurants, highlighted the strategic vision behind the move in a statement on Sunday, calling Taco Bell the coolest brand in its category and tailored for a generation seeking great flavor, value, and attitude. He emphasized that Dubai's bold adoption of new concepts makes it the ideal starting point before scaling the brand across the UAE and the GCC. While the exact opening date and initial location remain unannounced, the deal marks Americana's official entry into the Mexican-inspired quick-service restaurant segment, adding to its existing regional portfolio of Yum! Brands properties like KFC and Pizza Hut.
This launch marks a notable comeback for Taco Bell, which originally entered the UAE market in 2008 before withdrawing in 2012. Although the company never officially detailed its exit, a 2025 case study by Ivey Publishing pointed to strategic misalignments and intense competition. However, the modern UAE market has evolved significantly since then, characterized by a growing expatriate population and rising demand for Mexican cuisine—a trend further evidenced by the 2024 arrival of Chipotle's Mexican Grill in Dubai and Abu Dhabi under the Alshaya Group.
Globally, Taco Bell operates more than 9,000 restaurants, including over 1,200 locations across approximately 40 markets outside the US. Founded in Downey, California, in 1962 by entrepreneur Glen Bell, the chain is famous for its Americanized Mexican-style menu featuring tacos, burritos, quesadillas, nachos, and the Crunchwrap Supreme, operating under the global "Live Más" (Live More) philosophy. The brand also maintains a financial link to the UAE through Mubadala Capital, the Abu Dhabi asset manager that acquired major US franchisee K-MAC Enterprises in 2021.
Sean Tresvant, chief executive of Taco Bell, expressed excitement over continuing the brand's international momentum and connecting with a fresh base of fans in the region. For Americana Restaurants, the addition of Taco Bell further expands a massive regional footprint that already includes household names such as Hardee’s, Krispy Kreme, Peet’s Coffee, Wimpy, TGI Friday’s, Costa Coffee, Baskin-Robbins, Chicken Tikka, carpo, and Malak Al Tawouk across 12 countries.
