Niger's security forces successfully restored order at a vital military airbase in the capital, Niamey, following a mutiny staged by hundreds of disgruntled soldiers, marking a significant domestic test for military ruler Gen Abdourahamane Tiani.

Explosions and heavy gunfire broke out early on Saturday across Niamey, particularly impacting Base 101, a major military installation sharing a complex with Diori Hamani International Airport. Witnesses also reported intense shooting in the vicinity of the presidential palace.

According to state media, the uprising involved hundreds of disaffected troops and persisted for several hours until forces loyal to Gen Tiani regained control of the facility. Broadcasted footage displayed mutineers apparently surrendering, while three security sources confirmed that the Presidential Guard rallied to support Gen Tiani. However, the junta leader had not made a public appearance by Sunday morning.

Base 101 accommodates military aircraft, drones, a counter-terrorism unit, and international personnel from Russia and Italy. Russian ambassador Viktor Voropaev stated that the Kremlin-backed Africa Corps was requested to assist in neutralizing the mutineers. Meanwhile, the Alliance of Sahel States—comprising Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso—released a statement declaring the attempted mutiny contained and thwarted, condemning the rebellious soldiers and commending the security forces for restoring stability.

In a separate statement, the Niger National Guard dismissed false rumors regarding the dismissal or defection of its commander, Col-Major Ahmed Sidian, confirming his continued tenure and unwavering loyalty to Gen Tiani and the broader military apparatus.

Growing discontent has festered among frontline units as the military of Niger endures severe losses in ongoing campaigns against Islamist extremist factions affiliated with Al Qaeda and ISIS. Reports indicate the mutineers included personnel stationed in Niamey as well as troops deployed from Ouallam, Tera, and Dosso, locations that have experienced devastating casualties. Furthermore, the airbase itself has previously faced assaults this year, suffering attacks by an ISIS affiliate in January and an Al Qaeda-linked group in June.

Since seizing power in July 2023, Gen Tiani has distanced Niger from western allies, withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas), and forged closer alliances with Russia, alongside tightening state control over the strategic uranium sector following the seizure of assets from the French nuclear giant Orano. This latest insurrection indicates that internal dissent within the armed forces may now pose an escalating danger to Gen Tiani's regime alongside the persistent Islamist extremist threat.
