Minister of Industry Khaled Hashem announced that Egypt has positioned itself as a leading global producer and exporter of fertilizers. This achievement is driven by a robust industrial base, consistent energy supplies, and rich natural resources, especially phosphate, which is vital for fertilizer manufacturing.
Speaking during a tour in Suez Governorate alongside Suez Governor Hany Rashad, Hashem highlighted that government backing has shielded the sector from global crises and regional geopolitical tensions that have hindered production elsewhere. He credited stable energy access for enabling plants to sustain continuous operations, fulfill local needs, and boost exports.
The Minister also noted that European demand for Egyptian fertilizers has grown due to European plant closures during global energy crunches. This reliability has enhanced the global competitiveness of Egyptian products. Furthermore, Hashem emphasized that sugar remains a key strategic commodity for food security, stating that the ministry aims to maximize domestic output, boost manufacturing efficiency, achieve self-sufficiency, and increase exports. During his visit, he inspected both a fertilizer facility and a sugar refinery located in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
