President Donald Trump has called on communities across the United States to welcome tech facilities, arguing that opposing data centres will only hurt economic growth and benefit foreign competitors like China.

Writing in a social media post, Trump stated that the only reason communities should reject data centres is if they wish to remain backwards and poor. He emphasized that embracing the infrastructure would lead to success, wealth, lower taxes, and abundant job creation, declaring: "Let Data Reign."

The push comes as Amazon Web Services and other companies rapidly expand data centres nationwide to support the surging demand for artificial intelligence. However, these facilities have encountered widespread scepticism from both Republican and Democratic voters.

Critics, including consumer protection advocates and environmental activists, point out that data centres consume massive amounts of electricity and water. These demands raise significant concerns about strain on the power grid, potential utility bill increases, and water scarcity during droughts, alongside complaints from nearby residents regarding constant noise pollution.

A Gallup poll from March indicated that 71 percent of Americans oppose AI data centres in their local areas. Political divisions are shifting as well; Republican US Senate candidate Mike Rogers recently proposed a one-year pause on data centres in Michigan, drawing a contrast with his Democratic opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, who has called for an indefinite pause until strict federal regulations are established.

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance addressed the controversy by suggesting that tech firms should build dedicated power stations to supply energy back to the grid rather than depleting existing resources.
