Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced that Tehran will immediately reciprocate if the US restores its commitments under the June 17 framework for peace talks.
Speaking on Tuesday at a summit of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Mr Pezeshkian accused the US of breaching the interim agreement. He stated that the framework lasted less than two weeks before Washington began making excessive demands and failing to honor its commitments, despite being signed alongside US President Donald Trump.
“I state explicitly that if the US returns to its commitments under the aforementioned memorandum of understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately take reciprocal action,” Mr Pezeshkian said during a speech broadcast on state television. While noting that the violation of US commitments received an appropriate response from Iran, he did not elaborate on the specific measures taken.
The remarks follow heightened economic pressure from Washington and a fresh exchange of fire between the US and Iran. US President Donald Trump noted that sweeping new sanctions were taking effect strongly, while mentioning that Iran wanted to meet and that scope for diplomacy remained.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, speaking during a meeting of G20 finance ministers in North Carolina, warned that anyone engaging with Tehran risks being cut off from the dollar-based financial system. The recent military exchanges occurred after US Central Command reported precise actions against Iranian preparations to lay new mines in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting retaliatory Iranian attacks on US bases in Jordan that were intercepted by Jordanian forces.
Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, stated that the Iranian attacks on Gulf states and Jordan had proven to be a failure. Meanwhile, Mr Pezeshkian is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the summit in Bishkek.
