A devastating wave of Russian missile and drone strikes targeting Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and the surrounding region has left at least 12 people dead and 21 wounded, according to local authorities.
“Kyiv region came under a massive attack by Russian missiles and strike drones tonight,” Kyiv regional military administration chief Tymur Tkachenko stated on Telegram on Tuesday.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned the assault as “Russian terror,” noting that an Indian citizen was among the fatalities, and renewed his urgent appeals to international allies to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence systems.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the overnight attacks on the city claimed at least eight lives and injured five others, including two children. Ukrainian prosecutors confirmed that an additional four people died in the Kyiv region after a residential building in the suburb of Boryspil sustained heavy damage. President Zelenskyy added that 50 residents were successfully evacuated from the Boryspil building.
“Russia always plans its strikes specifically to cause as much destruction to people’s lives as possible, and it succeeds only when air defence capabilities are insufficient,” President Zelenskyy shared on social media.
In response, Russia’s Ministry of Defence stated that its overnight operations successfully struck military and energy facilities in Kyiv and Odesa, alongside nearby regions. Additionally, Ukraine’s border service reported that Russian forces struck the ferry checkpoint located at Orlivka along the border with Romania, a NATO member state.
Meanwhile, cross-border operations continued as a Ukrainian drone strike initiated a fire within the port area of Ust-Luga, a critical export hub situated in northwestern Russia, while Moscow forces worked to intercept incoming drones. In the Samara region, Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev reported via Telegram that a Ukrainian drone hit the town of Novokuibyshevsk, shattering windows in an apartment building. The area along the Volga River houses several major Russian oil refineries operated by the state oil company Rosneft. In the Belgorod region, the acting governor announced that a Ukrainian attack resulted in one fatality. Both Russia and Ukraine continue to deny targeting civilians deliberately.
In related developments, the commander of Ukraine’s Drone Forces announced that troops successfully struck 54 vessels belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet” during August, an effort aimed at disrupting illicit oil sales that help finance Russia’s ongoing war.
The escalation coincides with a gathering of European Union defence and foreign ministers in Ireland to discuss ways to enhance Ukraine’s air defences. Ukraine currently faces critical shortages of interceptor missiles, particularly United States-made Patriot systems required to counter ballistic threats. Over recent months, both sides have intensified long-range strikes targeting vital infrastructure such as warehouses, businesses, oil facilities, ports, and shipping vessels, resulting in a steady rise in civilian casualties.
