Egypt's Diaa Rashwan Emphasizes Timely Information to Counter Rumors and Social Media Misinformation

Egypt’s Minister of State for Information Diaa Rashwan recently emphasized the vital importance of coordination among government spokespersons, media advisers, and print, broadcast, and television media outlets. Speaking at an expanded meeting attended by 35 government spokespersons and media advisers, he highlighted that ensuring the rapid flow of accurate information on state and community affairs is essential for closing information gaps and preventing the spread of false reports.

Rashwan noted that providing official accounts of events, decisions, measures, and achievements helps counteract rumors aimed at undermining state efforts and social stability. He explained that improving the performance of officials is part of presidential directives to enhance Egyptian media and strengthen public awareness, which requires prompt responses to media requests to present the facts clearly.

During the gathering, participants discussed several challenges, including inaccurate information on social media and the reliance of certain outlets on unverified online sources. In response, officials called for clearer roles, greater access to institutional information, and advanced training programs. Rashwan concluded by highlighting ongoing efforts to establish sustained coordination frameworks and accelerate the issuance of a freedom of information law to regulate data sharing.
