The US State Department has given its approval for Iraq to purchase combat and utility helicopters, alongside related equipment and services, in a deal valued at approximately $800 million. According to the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, the approved package features Bell 412EPX utility helicopters and Bell 407M tactical and combat helicopters, as well as GAU-19 three-barrel machine guns and M260 seven-tube rocket launchers, though specific quantities were not disclosed.

Furthermore, the notification sent to Congress confirmed approval for Iraq's request for L-3 Wescam MX-15HDI electro-optical/infrared sensors and AN/AAR-60 Block 2 missile launch detection systems to aid the aircraft in conducting surveillance and identifying threats. The comprehensive package also covers very high frequency radios, spare parts, ground support equipment, technical data, alongside pilot and maintenance training.

The bureau stated that the proposed transaction will bolster the foreign policy and national security interests of the United States by enhancing the security of a crucial strategic partner. It further noted that the acquisition will augment Iraq's proficiency in addressing present and future dangers through improved rotary wing transport, reconnaissance, and air-to-surface targeting functions. Bell Textron, located in Fort Worth, Texas, serves as the principal contractor for the agreement.

While notifying Congress is a mandatory phase within the US foreign military sales framework, it does not confirm that a formal contract has been finalized; rather, it signifies State Department approval and initiates a 30-day Congressional review period. The Iraqi government has not yet provided an immediate response regarding the development. This potential agreement arrives as Iraq proceeds with the modernization of its armed forces amidst plans for the US-led anti-ISIS coalition to withdraw from the nation by September 30, with Baghdad expressing openness to bilateral security agreements with the US and other coalition partners to reinforce its military and intelligence operations.
