Former Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his departure as an MP, triggering an upcoming by-election within his north London constituency. Explaining his decision, he stated that the moment had arrived to "step aside and focus on other issues."

In an official statement, Keir Starmer elaborated that his future endeavors will center on "international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast changing world." Additionally, he pledged an ongoing commitment to his initiatives addressing violence against women and girls.

Before entering parliament, Keir Starmer built an extensive career as a barrister specializing in human rights and previously served as the head of the Crown Prosecution Service. He previously left the role of prime minister in July following a tenure lasting just over two years, at which point Andy Burnham succeeded him.

While initial indications suggested he would transition to the backbenches and maintain his position as an MP, Keir Starmer revealed on Tuesday that summer reflections led to the conclusion that "now was the right time to step aside" representing Holborn and St Pancras, a constituency he has served for 11 years.
