More than a thousand people have died since catastrophic flooding struck the Nepal-China border region last Wednesday, with thousands more reported missing. Below is a breakdown of the disastrous impact of the flooding in numbers:

Nepal

At least 1,003 people have died in the floods in Nepal, according to the latest update from the country’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). The NDRRMA also reported that 3,916 people remain missing in the catastrophe.

The Nepal Tourism Board stated that some 583 foreign nationals are among the missing. Meanwhile, 315 foreign nationals have been successfully rescued, including individuals from India, China, Germany, Bulgaria, Turkey, Italy, the United States, Malta, Switzerland, Russia, Portugal, and Oman. Additionally, five foreign nationals are currently in contact with authorities—three from Spain, one from Belgium, and one from the US. Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah announced that at least 11,379 people have been rescued since the flooding began.

China

In China, at least 16 people have died as a result of the flooding, according to state broadcaster CCTV. CCTV also reported that at least 546 people are missing in the country.

During a press conference, authorities confirmed that at least 261 foreigners from 23 countries are among the missing in China. This includes 104 individuals from Nepal, 49 from India, 33 from Latvia, 18 from the United States, and 15 from the United Kingdom. Chinese authorities further stated that foreign nationals from Canada, Australia, South Africa, Russia, Malaysia, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Estonia, France, Ireland, Finland, Lithuania, Portugal, Ukraine, Spain, Hungary, and Kazakhstan are also unaccounted for.
