Qatar and Ecuador have held their second round of political consultations in Doha, marking a significant milestone in high-level engagements between the two nations since Ecuador's new government took office in May 2025.
The discussions in Doha on Tuesday were led by the Ecuadorian delegation's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility Alejandro Dávalos, alongside the Qatari side headed by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi. Ecuador's Chargé d'Affaires in Doha, Carlos Andrés Zambrano Sánchez, also accompanied Alejandro Dávalos and attended separate meetings with senior Qatari officials to focus on bilateral cooperation and issues of mutual interest.
During the visit, Alejandro Dávalos met with Qatar Chamber Chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani on Monday to explore economic and trade relations, as well as opportunities to expand private sector collaboration. Both sides discussed a potential Qatar–Ecuador Business Meeting in the first quarter of 2027 to connect investors and business leaders from both countries.
Additionally, Alejandro Dávalos met with Qatar's Minister of State for International Cooperation Mariam Al-Misnad on Monday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and ongoing areas of mutual interest. The first round of these consultations originally took place in Ecuador in May 2018.
Diplomatic relations between Qatar and Ecuador were established in 1975 and have expanded over the decades, highlighted by the opening of embassies in their respective capitals in 2012. Key historical visits include the late Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani visiting Ecuador in January 2013 as the first Qatari head of state to do so, former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa visiting Doha in October 2014, and Qatar's Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani visiting Ecuador in 2018.
Over the years, bilateral ties have been reinforced through various agreements covering trade, investment, economic and technical cooperation, legal affairs, air services, and information exchange, alongside Ecuador's growing participation in Qatari trade, tourism, agriculture, and cultural initiatives.
