Former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his decision to step down as a member of parliament, leaving the UK Parliament after 11 years of service, which included six years as the leader of the United Kingdom's Labour Party.

Speaking on Tuesday, Keir Starmer stated that it was the “right time” to resign from his position as the MP for the Holborn and St Pancras seat in London, a move that will trigger a by-election. This announcement follows his resignation as the nation's premier six weeks prior, after losing the backing of ruling Labour Party MPs.

“It is now time to step aside and focus on other issues: international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world,” Keir Starmer shared on social media.

During his tenure as party leader, Keir Starmer steered Labour to a historic landslide victory in the 2024 general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. However, a series of policy U-turns, budget cuts, a diplomatic scandal, pressure from the radical right-wing Reform UK, and the rise of Andy Burnham—who subsequently became Britain’s seventh prime minister in a decade—ultimately eroded his authority and led to his departure.

Although Keir Starmer had previously indicated he would continue serving as a lawmaker until the next general election, he informed the local North London newspaper, the Camden New Journal, that he had altered his plans. The publication did not specify the exact timeframe for the upcoming by-election in the Holborn and St Pancras constituency.

While his domestic popularity had waned, international affairs were widely regarded as a key strength for Keir Starmer, particularly his efforts to build strong ties with EU leaders following Brexit. Notably, he forged a close partnership with French President Emmanuel Macron through the establishment of the Coalition of the Willing to support Ukraine.

In the 2024 election, Keir Starmer successfully retained his seat with a majority exceeding 11,500 votes, despite independent candidate Andrew Feinstein securing nearly 19 percent of the vote through a campaign focused on opposition to Israel’s war in Gaza and Labour's stance on the conflict. Meanwhile, the accession of Andy Burnham has resulted in a polling boost for Labour as Parliament prepares to resume on Tuesday.
