At least 20 people have lost their lives following a powerful magnitude-7.7 earthquake that struck off eastern Indonesia on Saturday. According to Fathur Rahman, head of the city's rescue agency, emergency responders around the port town of Maumere discovered 20 fatalities, along with six injuries and two individuals trapped under collapsed structures. Maumere serves as the primary town in Sikka Regency, located on Flores Island within the eastern region of Indonesia's vast archipelago.

Rescue teams have not yet reached Nagekeo, the area closest to the epicentre, where communications have also been severely disrupted, Fathur stated. Road access to Nagekeo was blocked by landslides, prompting another team to attempt a journey via ferry. The national disaster mitigation agency, BNPB, reported that approximately 2,000 residents were evacuated from Nagekeo, with structural damage confirmed across various houses, warehouses, and government facilities. Authorities also noted widespread power outages and traffic congestion throughout parts of the regency.

During a press conference, the governor of East Nusa Tenggara Province, Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena, confirmed that at least five victims were killed when falling rubble crushed them in their sleep. Nona, a 51-year-old resident of Talibura village in East Nusa Tenggara, described the terrifying ordeal: "The quake was massive, the shock was so strong, we were resting at home with family. There were 13 of us inside the house and we all ran to save ourselves."

Strong tremors lasting roughly one minute were felt across East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and parts of South Sulawesi. Following the early morning tremor, tsunami waves measuring under one meter were recorded in multiple regions of the southeast Asian nation, though authorities lifted the tsunami warning approximately three hours later.

The Indonesian geophysics agency BMKG registered the initial earthquake at 4:58 am at a depth of 15 kilometers, which was subsequently followed by several aftershocks. The agency recalled that the exact same area suffered extensive destruction during a magnitude-7.5 earthquake back in 1992. Indonesia is situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a highly active seismic zone where meeting tectonic plates frequently generate earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
