A devastating bus accident on Wednesday claimed the lives of at least 21 people, among them 10 Jordanian nationals, after the vehicle overturned on a coastal road in Egypt's south Sinai region, according to security officials.

Additionally, at least 24 passengers sustained injuries, with four currently in a critical condition, officials reported, though they did not specify if any of the injured were foreign nationals. Jordan's Foreign Ministry acknowledged that citizens from Jordan were among the casualties, without providing specific numbers.

The exact cause behind the vehicle overturning remains undetermined as it journeyed between the Red Sea resorts of Dahab and Nuweibaa. Nuweibaa serves dual purposes as both a vacation spot and the location of a bustling sea port, with both destinations drawing tourists due to their sandy shores, clear waters, and vibrant marine ecosystems that appeal to scuba divers and snorkellers.

Road accidents claim thousands of lives annually in Egypt, a country where frequent speeding, widespread disregard for traffic laws, and deteriorating road conditions—such as narrow lanes—frequently contribute to fatal crashes. This incident occurred less than a month following a tragedy near the Suez Canal city of Ismailia, where 18 individuals, predominantly children, died in a collision between a lorry and an oncoming vehicle, leaving 30 others injured.
