French investigators are examining a pistol discovered by British tourists two metres deep in a lake in the French Alps, raising hopes for a breakthrough in the notorious 2012 killing of the Al Hilli family. The weapon, believed to be a crucial piece of the puzzle, was found on August 20 in Lake Annecy near the Solitaire du Lac campsite.
The cold-case investigative unit based in Nanterre stated that the discovery is of significant interest to judges managing the case. Investigative judge Sabine Kheris has requested systematic updates on all inquiries involving the Luger P06, the German-manufactured weapon linked to the killings.
While lawyers urge caution against premature enthusiasm due to the weapon's long duration underwater, the discovery represents a renewed effort by the French justice system. The September 5, 2012 attack left Saad Al Hilli, his wife Iqbal, and his mother-in-law Suhaila al-Allaf dead alongside French cyclist Sylvain Mollier, while the couple's two young daughters survived.
