Yemeni government forces successfully thwarted an offensive launched by the Houthis along the al‑Mafalis front, located south of Haifan in the southeastern area of Taiz province, as ongoing military escalations continue to grip multiple governorates.

Speaking on Thursday, an official representing the Tor al‑Bahah military axis—which operates under the banner of government forces—stated that the army’s 4th Infantry Hashd Brigade successfully repelled the Houthi assault. The official emphasized that the rebel forces sustained significant casualties during the engagement. Furthermore, a coordinated military and security operation within Tor al‑Bahah remains focused on neutralizing the offensive, with officials asserting that the group will face ultimate defeat.

Waddah al‑Dubeish, a spokesman for the government forces, confirmed that air defense units actively engaged Houthi reconnaissance drones soaring above al-Makha, also known as Mocha, situated in the country's southwestern region.

The recent clashes follow a broader surge in hostilities. On Wednesday, the Yemeni government reported targeting Houthi positions and assemblies using artillery fire and drones across several governorates. According to Yemeni state television, government artillery strikes near the al‑Fakhir market in northern al‑Dhalea Governorate resulted in numerous casualties among Houthi fighters and reinforcements.

Fayyad al‑Numan, Yemen’s deputy minister of information, told the German news agency dpa that government forces executed intensive bombardments utilizing heavy artillery and drones against multiple Houthi frontlines on Wednesday.

Addressing the escalation, Rashad al‑Alimi, head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, declared that future Houthi actions will be met with comprehensive deterrence. Al‑Alimi stated that the government rejects any renewed truce modeled on previous frameworks, advocating instead for a permanent and sustainable peace centered around a sovereign state that maintains a monopoly on weapons. He reiterated that opportunities remain for the group to disarm and participate in national reconstruction.

Although Yemen experienced relative de‑escalation in the conflict between government forces and the Houthi movement beginning in April 2022, intermittent fighting flared up again in early July, causing numerous casualties on both sides.
