Five young men in Esna city, south of Luxor, tragically drowned after a group of them entered the Nile River near the new Esna Dam.

Mohamed Mahrous, a correspondent in Luxor for the Extra Channel, reported during a phone interview that seven young men were swimming in the area when five drowned, while two managed to survive.

River rescue teams successfully recovered four bodies, while search and rescue operations pressed on for the remaining victim. Mohamed Mahrous noted that the powerful current near the new Esna Dam area significantly hindered the search and recovery efforts.

According to initial reports, the group went to the Nile River to cool off from the intense summer temperatures in Luxor.

The recovered bodies were transferred to Tiba Specialized Hospital in Esna. Meanwhile, security forces and rescue teams maintained their search for the missing victim, with executive leaderships and the Luxor Security Director arriving at the scene to oversee the operations.

Regarding the two survivors, Mohamed Mahrous stated that one is receiving hospital treatment for suffocation, while the other remains in stable condition and is expected to be discharged following further evaluation.

Distressed families gathered outside Tiba Specialized Hospital to await the arrival of the bodies for burial in their hometown of al-Deir village in Esna.
