A woman visits a makeshift memorial on September 2, 2026, after a shooting at a rave party in Aarau in northern Switzerland [AFP]. According to police, the man suspected of fatally shooting an Italian woman at a rave in Switzerland’s Aarau acted as a “lone perpetrator”.

Michael Leupold, the commander of the Aargau cantonal police, stated during a Wednesday news conference that there is no evidence suggesting anyone else participated in the early Sunday attack, which claimed the life of a 22-year-old Italian woman and left five others wounded. “We, therefore, assume with a high degree of certainty that the shooting was the act of one individual,” Leupold declared.

Prosecutors report that the suspect, a 43-year-old Swiss man, surrendered to authorities on Monday in Delemont within northwestern Switzerland’s Jura canton and has refused to speak while in custody. Leupold noted that the suspect's motive remains unclear and that he had no prior record with the police.

Law enforcement officials hold a news conference after a shooting at a rave in Aarau [AFP]. Aargau cantonal prosecutor Christoph Ruedi stated that the suspected gunman suffers from “psychological problems” and has stayed silent following his arrest.

The incident has caused widespread public shock in Switzerland, where multi-victim shootings remain uncommon despite high rates of gun ownership. Authorities recovered two pistols and an AK-47 assault rifle from the suspect’s vehicle.

Meanwhile, the rave’s organisers expressed that they were “shocked and devastated,” sharing on their website that they “will do everything in our power to support the police in their work.” They added, “A rave should always be a place of joy and love. Never a place where people are killed, injured or left in fear.”
