The US Navy Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has arrived in eastern Thailand for a much-needed rest stop, marking the crew's first port call after nine and a half months at sea. The nuclear-powered vessel, carrying a crew of 5,000, navigated into Laem Chabang Port in Chonburi province early on Wednesday. It was preceded by the destroyer USS Frank E Petersen Jr and other supporting US naval vessels.
By the afternoon, busloads of plainclothes sailors and Marines transferred to a resort hotel in Pattaya, located 150 kilometres southeast of Bangkok. Thai officials confirmed that the deployment stop is intended for rest and recovery before the Lincoln eventually returns to its US base. The carrier had previously sustained a naval blockade and combat operations during the US-Israeli war on Iran.
Journalists from The Associated Press noted that the ship's exterior showed significant signs of wear, featuring large rust patches along the waterline and the edge of the flight deck. When questioned about the vessel's weathered appearance, Captain Dan Keeler, the Lincoln’s commanding officer, stated that such wear is normal for a long deployment and declined further comment.
US President Donald Trump previously dismissed concerns from crew families regarding the prolonged deployment, remarking earlier at Joint Base Andrews that the ship had not been at sea nearly long enough. Asked about the president's stance, Captain Keeler replied that the president speaks for himself.
Rear Admiral Robert E Loughran, commander of Carrier Strike Group 3, praised the historic accomplishments and professionalism of the crew in a statement. The sailors and Marines are scheduled to rest in Thailand for several days. Meanwhile, the ongoing US-Israeli conflict against Iran, initially projected by officials to last only a few weeks, has now entered its seventh month.
