United States President Donald Trump has proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself, asserting that the crucial waterway remains under Washington’s control despite near-daily Iranian attacks on vessels in the region. Trump’s proposal on Wednesday followed a series of US strikes in Iran that resulted in at least four deaths, including two children at a wedding in the southern city of Sirik.

“Now that we have it under USA control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump stated in a social media post, adding that it would be “hotter” than ever before.

In response to the military actions, Iran launched missiles at US bases in the region, driving oil prices up by approximately 4 percent. Despite claims from US officials that the Strait of Hormuz is open and oil is transiting daily, prices have remained elevated. Meanwhile, Iran maintains that the waterway is closed and under its control, and Saudi Arabia recently accused Iran of a strike on an oil tanker that left two people dead. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) continues to report frequent attacks on vessels in the area.

Domestically, the American Automobile Association (AAA) reported that petrol prices in the US climbed to $4.12 per gallon on Wednesday, up from under $3 prior to the conflict's start on February 28. The conflict, initially characterized by US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a brief six-week engagement, recently entered its seventh month.

Despite ongoing retaliatory strikes from Iran—including recent drone and missile attacks targeting US bases in Bahrain, Jordan, and Iraq—Trump continues to claim military victory and absolute control over the region. The suggestion to rename the waterway follows a similar recent action where Trump unilaterally renamed Lake Ontario as “Lake America” amid trade disputes with Canada.
