The UAE remains committed to protecting its right to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz while simultaneously pursuing diplomacy, according to Dr Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to President Sheikh Mohamed. This announcement follows a recent attack on an Adnoc ship within the waterway.
Dr Gargash emphasized that repeated attacks on Adnoc tankers will not deter the nation from maintaining a balanced and rational policy rooted in deterrence, diplomacy, and international law. The most recent incident took place on August 14.
"We will safeguard our rights to freedom of navigation and use of the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law and will defend our sovereignty and interests, while continuing the path of dialogue and giving priority to diplomatic options," Dr Gargash stated in a post on X. He also advocated for enhanced Gulf unity, stating the UAE would push for a stronger common regional position as a vital pillar for regional security and national interests during the crisis.
In a separate statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the incident as a flagrant breach of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which underscores the importance of freedom of navigation. The ministry further denounced attacks on commercial vessels and the disruption of international maritime routes.
According to the state news agency Wam, the UAE demanded that Iran cease its unprovoked attacks and ensure the unconditional reopening of the strait. Adnoc confirmed that one of its vessels was targeted while transiting the waterway on August 14, though no injuries were reported and the situation was successfully managed. This event marks the latest in a series of attacks involving Adnoc-linked ships, with the UAE previously attributing vessel assaults to Iran.
