An Israeli strike on the Lebanese village of Ansar early on Saturday resulted in the deaths of seven people, including three children, according to the country's Health Ministry. This incident marks one of the deadliest Israeli strikes on Lebanon since the June truce, leaving an additional three people injured.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam issued a strong condemnation of the attack, rejecting any claims that the victims were military targets. In a post on X, he stated that the responsibility for addressing any military infrastructure on Lebanese territory rests solely with the Lebanese state. The government has actively worked to consolidate all weapons under state control, which includes the arsenal of Iran-backed Hezbollah, as part of broader initiatives to reinforce state authority and halt hostilities with Israel.
Although Lebanon and Israel have engaged in multiple rounds of negotiations, including sessions in the US, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun noted that the strike delivered a clear message concerning the ongoing negotiation process and the US-led efforts to implement the agreement. Both nations have attempted to progress a US-brokered framework agreement designed to conclude hostilities and facilitate an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory. However, the most recent discussions concluded in Rome on August 6 without reaching a resolution, as deep divisions remain regarding Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon.
In a separate incident, the Lebanese Health Ministry reported that Israeli strikes also impacted Deir Al Zahrani, a village situated approximately 18km from Ansar. This attack resulted in four deaths and nine injuries, prompting some local residents to evacuate the area. Meanwhile, the Israeli military confirmed it conducted overnight strikes throughout southern Lebanon, asserting that the operations targeted Hezbollah infrastructure. The military also struck the Ali Al Taher ridge, a hilltop located south-east of the Nabatieh region that has served as a central point for Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon.
