Dubai Customs successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle more than 70 million cigarettes into a European country. According to officials on Saturday, the seizure involved 360,500 cartons across nine shipments that were routed through three air cargo centres in Dubai.
Customs officials flagged the shipments after discovering that the physical contents conflicted with the information declared in the shipping documents, which falsely stated the cargo contained clothes.
“Successfully identifying nine export shipments across three air cargo facilities and linking them to a single importer confirms that the strength of customs operations today does not depend on inspection alone,” stated Abdulla Alblooshi, director of Air Cargo Centres Management at Dubai Customs. He emphasized that operations begin with intelligence, risk indicator analysis, and anticipating risks before shipments are completed.
The seizure of nearly seven tonnes of tobacco highlights the efficiency and preparedness of the department in countering illicit trade. Mr Alblooshi noted that the operation reinforces Dubai Customs’ critical role in combating smuggling, fraudulent activities, and safeguarding international supply chains, thereby bolstering confidence in Dubai as a secure global trade and logistics hub.
Dubai Customs pointed out that the seizure holds international significance as the shipments were intended for foreign markets rather than the local one. Furthermore, the Air Cargo Centres Management team executed 182 seizures during the first three months of the year, comprising 161 security-related and 21 customs-related seizures.
