A Saudi man in his forties is recovering in hospital after being stabbed during an attempted robbery in the upscale Mayfair district of central London on Thursday evening. London's Met Police responded to emergency calls at 9.38pm regarding an incident in Berkeley Square, where the victim was treated at the scene before being transported for further medical care. Authorities confirmed his injuries are not life-threatening.
Investigators believe the victim was targeted for his backpack, which contained a luxury watch that was not visible at the time. No items were ultimately stolen during the attack. A 58-year-old man was apprehended at the scene on suspicion of attempted robbery, possession of an offensive weapon, and grievous bodily harm. The suspect was also taken to hospital to receive treatment for minor injuries.
Following the event, the Saudi Embassy issued a statement via X acknowledging that "a Saudi citizen was subjected to a stabbing incident in the Mayfair area." The embassy called for a swift investigation and accountability under the law, while urging visiting and resident citizens to exercise caution, maintain vigilance, and refrain from displaying valuable items in public spaces. This incident follows the fatal stabbing of Saudi student Mohammed Algasim in Cambridge last year, a crime for which a construction worker received a life sentence in June.
The attack has heightened concerns regarding street crime and the theft of luxury watches and mobile phones in London. Despite these security worries, London's mayor, Sadiq Khan, has previously defended the city's safety record by highlighting statistics showing lower murder rates compared to other major international cities. Meanwhile, the Met Police stated that the assault appears to be an isolated event with no ongoing threat to the public, though officers will maintain watch over the situation. A London Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed that emergency responders arrived in under five minutes to treat the victim and transport him to a major trauma centre.
