President Donald Trump dismissed the ongoing Iran war as “small potatoes” during remarks in the Oval Office on Friday, minimizing a six-month conflict that has resulted in 18 American service-member deaths and hundreds of injuries, while also causing a spike in gas prices.

“A lot of people don’t call it a war. I call it a military conflict because it’s small potatoes for us. It’s not a big thing,” President Donald Trump stated. His comments echoed remarks made a day earlier by Vice President JD Vance, who argued the situation should not be classified as a “war” because major combat operations concluded months ago.

Despite routine exchanges of strikes, President Donald Trump characterized the conflict as intermittent and low-grade. “I would say that it’s intermittent. You know, we do intermittent strikes,” he said, adding that there is currently no active fighting.

Earlier in the week, the US reported targeting nearly 60 military sites around the Strait of Hormuz—including air defense installations, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities, and communications sites—while simultaneously providing escorts for ships navigating the waterway. The administration has shifted toward a financial containment strategy, applying sanctions on Iran’s trading partners, though it has not yet penalized China, which serves as Tehran’s primary economic lifeline.

With a state visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled for this month, President Donald Trump downplayed Beijing’s involvement. “They are not really involved. Very little involvement by China. China could have plenty of involvement,” he noted. He also highlighted potential alternative routes and pipelines bypassing the Strait of Hormuz, such as an overland path through Syria.

Furthermore, President Donald Trump hinted at an impending operation targeting a suspected Iranian nuclear site south of Tehran. “We may hit Pickaxe very soon,” he said, referencing the underground facility where Iran is believed to have relocated portions of its highly enriched uranium stockpile.

Reiterating his refusal to label the situation a war, President Donald Trump concluded: “It’s a military conflict, but it’s very intermittent. I could see somebody not calling it a war. I don’t think it matters what you call it. What matters is the fact that we have had tremendous success.”
