A Russian drone struck the Kyiv headquarters of Ukraine’s Security Service, the SBU, on Friday, marking a rare and direct hit on a vital government building that underscores Ukraine’s critical shortages of air defenses.

The daytime strike—the first time the SBU building has been targeted in the four-and-a-half-year conflict—followed days of near-continuous aerial assaults by Russia on the Ukrainian capital. Authorities reported that 12 people were injured in the attack and emergency services rushed to the scene.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the drone was aimed directly at the office of SBU chief Oleksandr Poklad inside the building. The SBU later confirmed that Poklad was safe and uninjured.

“I instructed Poklad to deliver an appropriate, tangible response and, where possible, one that mirrors this strike, to the Russians once everything is ready. Our military will support this response,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Kyiv has endured eight days of attacks, with strikes hitting multiple buildings in the city center as well as warehouses and factories, including a Coca-Cola facility in the suburbs. At least 53 people have been killed and 134 injured across Kyiv and the wider Kyiv region since the nonstop attacks began last month.

The attack on the SBU represents a major escalation and highlights Kyiv's growing inability to defend vital assets against Russian strikes due to severe shortages of interceptor missiles. Most recent attacks have utilized jet-powered drones traveling up to 500 kilometers per hour (310 miles per hour), allowing them to evade Ukrainian air defenses. These machines are too fast for Kyiv’s mobile fire groups, leaving ground-to-air missiles or fighter jets—both extremely limited in supply—as the only defense options.

While Russia has targeted Ukrainian government buildings throughout the war, it has never successfully struck a target of such importance during daylight hours.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that the attack “demanded resolute response.”

“Moscow launched this strike during a renewed push for peace — laying bare its true rejection of diplomacy,” Andrii Sybiha said, noting that US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner plan to visit Moscow and Kyiv soon.

“We call on international partners to unequivocally condemn these actions and step up pressure on the Putin regime,” he added.

The SBU serves as Ukraine’s internal security agency, comparable to the FBI in the United States or MI5 in the United Kingdom, and investigates Russian crimes on Ukrainian territory. The agency's headquarters is located in the heart of historical Kyiv, situated across from the UNESCO-listed Saint Sophia Cathedral and near the Golden Gate and the National Opera landmarks.
