Dozens of masked individuals participating in a demonstration against Channel migrant crossings briefly blocked access to the Port of Dover on Saturday, causing temporary disruptions to ferry traffic between England and France.
Footage shared online captured demonstrators dressed in black and wearing balaclavas marching onto the roadways surrounding the port in the United Kingdom. In a livestreamed video, a group of men chanting "stop the boats" confronted a line of police officers.
The UK government strongly condemned the demonstration, stating that the actions exceeded the boundaries of peaceful protest. The Port of Dover announced on Saturday morning that all traffic entering and exiting the terminal was halted due to an active public order incident. By noon, port managers and P&O Ferries confirmed that access had been restored and traffic was moving freely.
Local police forces reported that they were engaging with the demonstrators, who had initially cut off all routes in and out of the crucial terminal connecting southern England to northern France. According to the National Highways agency, the demonstration resulted in a 6.4km traffic jam on Saturday morning.
Chris Vinson, a local Conservative Party councillor, noted that the demonstration appeared connected to illegal migration. While reporting no direct violence, he described the experience of having vehicle paths blocked by individuals in black paramilitary gear and balaclavas as highly intimidating.
A statement from the Labour government emphasized that while the right to peaceful protest remains fundamental to democracy, the behavior in Dover and the resulting travel disruptions were unacceptable. The government acknowledged the frustration experienced by those affected.
The United Kingdom continues to face challenges regarding perilous small-boat crossings, which have brought tens of thousands of migrants to southeast England in recent years and fueled political debate. The hard-right Reform UK party has leveraged the issue amid rising anti-immigration sentiment, while the Labour government reported lower summer crossing numbers due to cooperation agreements with the French government.
As Britain's largest international ferry port, Dover handles over 10,000 freight vehicles and 15,000 passenger vehicles daily during the summer, supporting a significant portion of the nation's trade with the European Union.
