Global credit rating agency Fitch has officially removed Qatar from its Rating Watch Negative status and maintained the country's sovereign credit rating at “AA”. According to the agency, the risk of further severe damage to its LNG infrastructure has significantly declined since March.

Fitch, one of the world's major agencies assessing the ability of governments and companies to meet their financial obligations, assigns an “AA” rating as one of its highest grades. This indicates a very strong ability to meet financial commitments and a very low expected risk of default.

Highlighting Qatar's solid sovereign assets, one of the world's highest GDP per capita levels, and the ongoing expansion of gas production, Fitch noted these as key strengths supporting the country's credit profile despite recent regional pressures. The rating currently carries a negative outlook, meaning Fitch still identifies potential risks that could lead to a lower rating in the future, distinguishing it from an immediate Rating Watch Negative status.

“The impact of the war on the credit profile will take longer to discern,” the agency stated. Fitch had initially placed Qatar on negative watch in March due to concerns over regional conflict impacts on energy infrastructure and LNG exports. While those concerns have not fully vanished, and disruption to LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz remains a source of pressure, the immediate threat has eased.
