US Central Command forces struck three Iranian crude oil tankers on Saturday following unprovoked attacks by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to a statement from Centcom. The targeted vessels included M/T Downy off the coast of Kharg Island and M/T Stark 1 near Jask, while a third carrier, M/T Kylo ("Noxen"), was rendered inoperable in the Gulf of Oman after the crew was directed to abandon ship.
US officials stated that the vessels belonged to a multibillion-dollar shadow network funding the IRGC and its regional proxies. Centcom chief Admiral Brad Cooper warned that any attacks on American ships would result in a higher economic cost, emphasizing that the US will defend its forces and target Iran's oil fleet if necessary. State-run Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) confirmed a strike on an Iranian tanker near Kharg Island by four American missiles, noting that crew members were safely evacuated with no initial casualties reported.
The military action follows recent warnings regarding Iran's oil infrastructure, which handles about 90 per cent of the nation's crude exports. Analysts note that sustained damage to Kharg Island could severely impact global supply and halt Iranian crude exports, currently estimated at 1.5 million to 1.8 million barrels per day. The strikes coincide with broader economic pressure campaigns announced by Mr Trump, alongside additional threats of potential military action targeting Iran's underground facilities, including the Pickaxe Mountain complex near Natanz.
