The decades-dormant sovereignty row between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands has reignited, sparked by a joint British-Israeli oil exploration project off the archipelago’s north coast that drew vehement objections from Buenos Aires. President Javier Milei has responded by threatening to sanction companies operating in the region. This renewed push to reclaim the territory has also been bolstered by United States President Donald Trump’s suggestion that Washington might reconsider its official position on the islands.

With Britain and Argentina having fought a war over the territory more than four decades ago, questions are now being raised about whether the escalating dispute could lead to another armed confrontation. Presenter Cyril Vanier explores the situation with guests Diego Guelar, former Argentinian ambassador to the US, European Union and China; Christopher Sabatini, director of the Latin America programme at Chatham House; and Javier Farje, a journalist and historian specialising in Latin American affairs.
