A billboard featuring a portrait of the late Iranian leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is displayed on the side of a highway in Tehran, Iran, on April 14, 2026. At least 10 people lost their lives in a devastating fuel tanker blast in western Iran, according to reports by Iranian national broadcast media (IRIB).
The deadly tanker explosion occurred on Saturday following a severe road crash on the Hamedan-Sanandaj highway. The accident was triggered by a technical fault in the braking system of the vehicle carrying the tanker, explained the governor of Sanandaj, the capital of Iran’s Kurdistan province, as noted by the Reuters news agency.
In addition to the fatalities, at least six other people sustained injuries in the incident, the governor confirmed, noting that these casualty figures rely on initial reports. Local officials stated that the resulting fire was swiftly brought under control, though they withheld further details regarding the identities of the victims.
This latest tragedy contributes to a long history of fatal tanker and bus collisions across Iran, where deteriorating road conditions, ageing vehicle fleets, and heavy freight traffic create persistent hazards. For context, at least 13 people died in 2018 when a fuel tanker crashed into a bus that had stopped for passengers near Sanandaj.
Data from UNICEF indicates that Iran’s rate of traffic crashes is 20 times the global average due to poor infrastructure and lax traffic enforcement. Furthermore, a May 2017 report by the Tehran-based newspaper Financial Tribune revealed that road accidents in Iran claim more than 20,000 lives and injure 800,000 people annually.
