Military forces of Yemen’s internationally recognised government have engaged in fierce battles with Houthi rebels across several fronts, focusing heavily on the Taiz and Hodeidah provinces alongside the western Red Sea coast. According to Turkiye’s Anadolu news agency, the Yemeni military successfully recaptured the Hais district, located south of Hodeidah, which serves as a vital strategic link connecting the Hodeidah, Taiz and Ibb provinces.
Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi stated that Yemen’s armed forces remain fully capable of reclaiming the entirety of the country's territory. He issued a stern warning that the Houthis would face the consequences of their actions, adding that Taiz would not serve as a corridor for the group's backers, referencing Iran. Al-Alimi further cautioned that the Houthis' miscalculations would ultimately result in their complete collapse.
This ongoing violence builds upon a series of tit-for-tat attacks that erupted the previous week, involving a combination of air raids and ground offensives between government troops and the Iran-backed rebels. Fayad al-Numan, deputy undersecretary of Yemen’s Ministry of Information, reported that government troops also captured dozens of Houthi fighters during engagements in the nearby al-Jarahi district, where a counteroffensive was subsequently launched.
On Saturday, Yemeni forces persisted with airstrikes targeting Houthi positions across Taiz and Lahj. Yemeni media outlets noted that military drones successfully destroyed Houthi reinforcements situated south of al-Jarahi, operating in tandem with a ground assault. An Al Jazeera correspondent on Sunday reported hearing powerful explosions in Taiz, highlighting the Yemeni Defence Ministry's recent deployment of advanced weapons systems.
Yemeni military spokesman Colonel Majed al-Nozaili confirmed that forces struck a Houthi site within the province as a direct retaliatory measure against the group's ongoing violations and escalation.
Tragically, the renewed fighting has inflicted a devastating toll on the civilian population. According to the AFP news agency, clashes in Taiz resulted in over 60 deaths, including civilians, on Saturday alone. Meanwhile, Yemen’s state news agency Saba’a reported that Houthi shelling directed at a civilian gathering along the road connecting Taiz and Aden left four civilians dead and nine others injured.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that approximately 1,800 families have been forcibly displaced over the past two days due to the rapid escalation of violence in Taiz. Additionally, the Yemeni government issued a separate warning declaring that any Houthi movement directed toward the Bab al-Mandeb strait will encounter severe attrition.
