Once a familiar face on television screens across Egypt, Sarah Khalifa's life took a dramatic turn resulting in a death sentence. Her journey spanned years of media work, program hosting, production, event organizing, and private business ventures, which ultimately culminated in a conviction tied to one of the largest drug manufacturing and trafficking cases in Cairo's judicial history.

The Cairo Criminal Court, convening at the Fifth Settlement Court Complex, concluded the “Grand Drug Case” on Saturday September 5. The court handed down a death sentence by hanging to Khalifa and 11 other defendants, imposed a fine of LE500,000 on each, and ordered the confiscation of seized drugs, vehicles, equipment, gold jewelry, and mobile phones. The unanimous verdict followed the referral of the defendant case files to the Grand Mufti of Egypt for his religious opinion.

Born in Cairo on March 29, 1994, Khalifa began her media career presenting programs on the “ART” channel before a lengthy tenure on the Iraqi Al-Sharqiya channel. She later expanded into production and event planning by launching “Sarah Production,” a company focused on organizing parties. Her social media presence grew through participation in artistic performances, a 2024 return to television co-hosting the program “Sarah and Beka” with popular singer Hamo Beka, performing in Dubai, and opening a beauty clinic in the Agouza district of Giza.

In April 2025, security forces arrested Khalifa, leading to an investigation by the New Cairo Public Prosecution regarding the possession of narcotics intended for distribution. Security services monitored the group for approximately 40 days before executing arrest warrants on April 17, 2025. Investigations indicated that Khalifa led the group alongside her brother and others, importing raw materials from abroad to manufacture and distribute synthetic narcotics within Egypt.

The prosecution referred 28 defendants to the Criminal Court in a case that involved charges of forming an organized criminal group, trafficking synthetic narcotics, and possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Authorities seized over 750 kilograms of synthetic drugs and raw materials, alongside weapons and ammunition, supported by testimonies from 20 witnesses and digital evidence including conversations, photos, and videos.

During the trial, defense arguments challenged arrest and search procedures, evidence validity, and the connection of specific defendants to seized items. On August 4, the Cairo Criminal Court referred the case files of Khalifa and 12 other defendants to the Grand Mufti of Egypt. Ultimately, the court sentenced Khalifa and 11 co-defendants to death by hanging, sentenced nine defendants to life imprisonment with LE100,000 fines each, and acquitted seven others.
