When Apple holds its annual iPhone event on September 9, it’ll be the first time in more than a decade that Tim Cook won’t introduce the company’s latest products. Instead, John Ternus will debut as Apple’s new chief executive during the company’s most important event of the year. Expectations are high as Ternus takes over while Apple faces pressure to evolve its products for the AI era.

In July, the iPhone maker became the second company in history to reach a $5 trillion market capitalization, raising the bar for what analysts and investors expect from product advancements and financial performance. Ternus’ background in hardware engineering has led many to believe his tenure is likely to usher in a new age of innovation for Apple. Observers will be watching closely for signals of Ternus’ vision, especially as the company prepares to follow rivals into a new product category with a foldable iPhone.

Beyond the fanfare, Ternus must quickly cement his direction for Apple to navigate pressing hurdles, including regulatory obstacles in Europe and a memory shortage.

Apple’s AI Troubles

Ternus’ engineering experience could prove to be a major advantage for Apple, which has faced criticism over its AI approach over the last two years. Last year, the company delayed a new version of Siri, which is now scheduled to launch this fall. Gene Munster, managing partner for tech investment firm Deepwater Asset Management, called it a huge miss, noting that while they are now on the right path, it could have been a much bigger win.

With Apple traditionally tailoring its devices and chips for its own software and services, Ternus’ deep hardware background could be critical in designing new devices optimized for AI. In the near term, Apple is banking on Siri to help it gain ground in the AI race, leveraging data like text messages and photos to deliver personalized answers.

Nabila Popal, a senior director for tech market research firm International Data Corporation, told CNN that Apple’s traditional focus on user privacy and direct integration of AI into iOS tools like the camera and messages apps could provide a distinct edge.

Pressure to Deliver Hit Products

All eyes will be on Ternus to deliver a new blockbuster hit. While Tim Cook is remembered for scaling the iPhone and building a massive ecosystem of services and accessories like Apple Music, the Apple Card, the Apple Watch, and AirPods, investors are hopeful that Ternus will spark a fresh push into new hardware, such as the foldable iPhone.

The IDC projects that Apple will capture 40% of the market for foldable phones by 2027, despite entering the space years behind rivals Samsung and Chinese smartphone giant Huawei.

Memory Shortage and European Regulation

The tech industry has also been rattled by an ongoing memory shortage driven by data center demand, causing companies like Apple, Nintendo, and Microsoft to raise prices. Analysts like Mike Howard, vice president of memory coverage at TechInsights, estimate Apple may need to significantly increase smartphone prices to maintain margins.

Additionally, Apple faces hurdles in the European Union, where regulatory compliance has forced changes to App Store terms and delayed the launch of the new Siri in the region. Experts caution that balancing third-party AI assistant access with user privacy will remain a delicate tightrope walk.

Ultimately, Ternus must navigate these challenges while living up to the larger-than-life valuation reached during the Cook era, balancing the profitable machine left behind with a renewed sense of technological surprise.
