Qatar's Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani is set to embark on a two-day official visit to the People’s Republic of China on Monday, September 7, to engage in high-level discussions regarding strategic bilateral relations and economic cooperation.
According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Dr Majed Al-Ansari, who announced the upcoming itinerary to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), the meetings running through September 8 will also address pressing regional developments, ongoing diplomatic de-escalation efforts, and the critical importance of ensuring maritime security and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The diplomatic engagement in Beijing unfolds against the backdrop of active Qatari mediation between the United States and Iran. Following the expiration of a 60-day negotiation window tied to a June 18 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Washington and Tehran, commercial transit through the strategic waterway remains unresolved.
In response, Qatar—working alongside Oman and Pakistan—has intensified efforts to restore dialogue. Sheikh Mohammed previously traveled to Tehran on August 27 to meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss a joint proposal for a temporary shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz.
Dr Al-Ansari warned that the continued uncertainty surrounding the strait poses risks of wider regional escalation, highlighting Doha's commitment to maintaining open commercial sea lanes. The security situation remains delicate, following a September 4 confirmation by Dr Al-Ansari that the Qatar Armed Forces intercepted incoming Iranian missiles and drones while emphasizing that military escalation is unjustifiable.
China remains a vital energy client and commercial partner for Qatar, with both nations maintaining consistent diplomatic coordination centered on international trade routes and stability in the Middle East.
