The Israeli Chamber of Commerce recently inaugurated a representative office in Banja Luka, the administrative center of the Bosnia and Herzegovina entity of Republika Srpska, in a move officials emphasized will further solidify bilateral ties. This development unfolds as Israel faces heightened international scrutiny over its military campaign in the Gaza Strip, including opposition from the Sarajevo-based Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the nation's other primary political entity.

Conversely, Republika Srpska has maintained steadfast backing for Israel since the onset of the conflict in October 2023. Milorad Dodik, the entity's effective leader and former president, has consistently voiced pro-Israeli stances, positioning Republika Srpska as a principal ally for Israel in the Balkans. Following the escalation in Gaza, Milorad Dodik stated that Republika Srpska firmly supports Israel's right to self-defense, while the Palace of the Republic in Banja Luka was illuminated with the colors of the Israeli flag. Milorad Dodik, who faced political sanctions last year including a ban from holding office after being convicted for defying decisions by the international envoy overseeing the Dayton Peace Accords, has also opposed efforts seeking the international recognition of Palestine.

During the opening ceremony in Banja Luka, Milorad Dodik emphasized historical and political connections between the Serb and Jewish communities, drawing parallels in their experiences of suffering. Israel’s Ambassador in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Galit Peleg, noted that the new office aims to foster business connections and promote investment cooperation, alongside Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli. Galit Peleg remarked on receiving office space from the Office of President Milorad Dodik amid local demonstrations in Sarajevo. Israeli businessman Amir Gross Kabiri has been appointed as the office's president, further bridging economic ties stemming from previous ventures such as the Aluminij facility in Mostar.

Analysts suggest the partnership may offer financial relief to Republika Srpska amid mounting debt and economic challenges. However, experts like Davor Gjenero warn that uncoordinated diplomatic and economic maneuvering by Republika Srpska could threaten Bosnia and Herzegovina's internal stability and complicate its integration path toward the European Union.
