US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have held talks with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, marking a fresh diplomatic push by the Trump administration to end the Russia-Ukraine war. US President Donald Trump stated that the envoys brought a proposal to end Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II, while a senior Russian official described the discussions as an important peacemaking visit.
Following their meetings in Moscow, Kushner and Witkoff arrived in Kyiv to continue discussions and meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The diplomatic push coincided with a temporary three-day ceasefire announced by both Moscow and Kyiv to facilitate the travel of the US delegation.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov described the three-hour meeting as highly useful, substantive, and constructive, noting that the envoys outlined a number of ideas for a potential settlement. However, fundamental disagreements remain, particularly regarding Russia's demands that Ukraine not join NATO and that it cede four partially occupied regions.
The US delegation also included Treasury official Gene Lang, suggesting that economic sanctions and financial measures against Russia formed part of the negotiations. As the conflict continues as a war of attrition alongside escalating drone and missile strikes, the Trump administration seeks to revive peace efforts amid ongoing international and domestic pressures.
