An Amazon cargo plane has crashed at Miami International Airport in Florida, United States, after overrunning its runway during landing, causing significant disruptions at one of the nation's busiest travel hubs.
According to the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Boeing 767-300 aircraft overran the runway at 2pm ET (6pm GMT) after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported that multiple vehicles were struck by the aircraft, which erupted in flames upon impact. Emergency crews responded to extinguish the blaze and evaluate the condition of those affected, though the exact number of individuals on board and details regarding injuries or fatalities remain unconfirmed.
Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokesperson, stated that the aircraft was operated by 21 Air and suffered an incident during its landing attempt. "We're working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened," Nantel said, emphasizing that the primary focus is on the safety and well-being of everyone involved.
Footage shared online captured dense black smoke rising near the runway area. Preliminary reports suggest the plane veered off the runway and intersected a nearby roadway. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced it is monitoring the situation and will release updates as they become available.
In response to the accident, US Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced a complete ground stop at the airport, advising passengers to expect major travel delays. The FAA has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
