North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, accompanied by his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, attended the commissioning ceremony of the destroyer Kang Kon at Wonsan Port, North Korea, on September 6, 2026. According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim stated that the newly deployed warship is capable of delivering annihilating retaliatory strikes on an enemy amidst constant regional threats.

Named after the North Korean military leader killed in action during the Korean War, the Kang Kon was formally deployed at an eastern port ceremony in Kangwon Province on Sunday. Kim remarked that the vessel represents the self-respect and determination of North Korea to safeguard its rights and interests, asserting that the time has arrived to exercise sovereignty at sea and underwater.

While KCNA did not explicitly detail the vessel's specific armament, it noted that the Kang Kon shares the same weapons systems as the 5,000-tonne warship Choe Hyon launched in June. Previous reports indicate that Choe Hyon-class destroyers can accommodate various weapons, including missiles analysts believe can carry nuclear payloads.

Sunday marks the third launch for the Kang Kon, which previously suffered a partial capsize during its initial May 2025 commissioning before undergoing repairs, relaunches, sea trials, and subsequent weapons testing in July. Kim announced plans to demonstrate another phase of North Korea's naval expansion within eight months, as Pyongyang accelerates modernization efforts and constructs new naval bases along the east coast to bolster its nuclear-capable forces against Washington and Seoul.
