Philippine Defence Secretary Gilberto Teodoro has cautioned that Beijing might interpret recent reductions in joint US-South Korea military exercises as an opening to assert its influence across the Asia Pacific region. Speaking during the Seoul Defense Dialogue, an annual multilateral security forum on Monday, Teodoro asserted that “China is very quick to exploit gaps” when questioned about potential Chinese maneuvering. He also noted that Washington provided Manila with “definite assurances” regarding unwavering US commitments to the Philippines, while accusing China of manipulating democratic systems to propagate “distortive narratives.”

The adjustments follow a directive from US President Donald Trump ordering a “substantial reduction” in annual war games, which led South Korea and the US to shorten their joint military drills and scale back field training last month. The Ulchi Freedom Shield war games concluded six days ahead of schedule, with President Trump attributing the decision to his “very good relationship” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, alongside linking it to Seoul's earlier reluctance to join the US and Israel’s conflict involving Iran.

Although South Korea’s presidential office initially considered potential “contributions” to US freedom of navigation operations in the Strait of Hormuz, officials later clarified that no formal decision had been reached. Any future military deployment requires formal approval from the country’s National Security Council, a cabinet meeting resolution, and consent from the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, President Trump indicated plans to meet with Kim later in the year, though Kim Yo Jong subsequently issued a statement denying any active dialogue between the two leaders and arguing that Washington maintains a “hostile” policy toward North Korea.

In response to ongoing regional security dynamics, the US, South Korea, and Japan are scheduled to commence five days of trilateral military exercises near South Korea’s Jeju Island. South Korea’s military emphasized that the defensive Freedom Edge exercise aims to counter North Korean nuclear and missile threats while fostering regional stability. Conversely, North Korea has condemned the trilateral drills as a “reckless show of strength” designed to encircle China and pressure Russia.
