The arrival of 140 migrants who completed a grueling 10-hour English Channel crossing crammed onto a single vessel has sparked intense protests described as intimidating. Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Portsmouth on the UK's south coast to voice their opposition to small boat arrivals, which are being increasingly overcrowded by people smuggling gangs adapting to French authorities' crackdowns.

The dinghy originated from the Bay of the Seine, France, covering roughly 273km—a much longer route than the typical departures from Calais. French rescue boats shadowed the vessel for 10 hours before it reached UK waters near the Isle of Wight, where it was met by the coastguard and lifeboats. The migrants were subsequently brought ashore near Portsmouth rather than the usual port of Dover.

Approximately 300 protesters assembled for the demonstration, which was coordinated through Patriotic Platform, founded by far-right activist Daniel Thomas, also known as Danny Tommo. As an associate of Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, he rallied supporters to Portsmouth, stating in a livestream that blocked roads would prevent departures. The gathering aimed to block migrants from being transported to the Manston processing centre in Kent, following a similar demonstration in Dover on Saturday where masked protesters blocked roads and chanted slogans.

AFP reported that a mega-dinghy carrying 230 migrants was also spotted setting out from France. While Kent Police labeled their demonstration spontaneous, they faced scrutiny regarding their lack of advance awareness. Meanwhile, Hampshire Police implemented a dispersal order valid until Monday evening, deploying officers to maintain order and warning that non-compliance could lead to arrest.

Government officials strongly condemned the unrest. Emma Reynolds, the chief secretary to the Treasury, criticized the thuggish and intimidating behavior of the protesters while noting that police brought the unprecedented scale of the protest under control.

Although small boat arrivals have decreased by about 40 percent compared to the same timeframe last year—a trend the Labour party government attributes to its interception agreement with France—smugglers continue to maximize profits by packing up to 230 people into a single vessel. These mega-dinghies serve as a stark visual reminder of ongoing migration numbers. A Home Office representative emphasized that the government is cracking down on dangerous crossings, noting that joint efforts have prevented over 48,000 crossing attempts and seized 1,100 boats and engines since the election, alongside a new payment-by-results deal to increase personnel on French beaches.
