A devastating avalanche struck the Kabardino-Balkaria region in Russia's North Caucasus, leaving at least 11 people dead and six others injured, according to local emergency services.

The deadly wall of snow swept down Mount Mizhirgi, identified as one of the highest peaks in Russia’s North Caucasus, at approximately 5 p.m. local time on Sunday. The disaster impacted a group of 33 climbers scaling the mountain.

By 9 a.m. local time on Monday, 10 climbers had managed to descend the mountain safely on their own, while authorities confirmed the fate of six others remained unknown.

Over 50 emergency workers mobilized for the search and rescue operation. However, officials noted that efforts were severely hampered by treacherous terrain and a high risk of further avalanches.
