Qatar's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari revealed in an interview with CNN that Doha's primary diplomatic focus is establishing the necessary political and technical framework for a sustainable U.S.-Iran deal. Speaking to CNN's Becky Anderson, Al-Ansari emphasized that Qatar aims to avoid merely freezing the conflict and risking future escalation, striving instead for lasting solutions that keep the Strait of Hormuz open and reduce regional economic pressures.
Highlighting the broader geopolitical landscape, Al-Ansari described Gaza as the central nucleus of the regional crisis. He noted that the Palestinian issue cannot be treated as secondary and requires comprehensive international and regional efforts to reach a resolution.
Addressing the technical and political obstacles in the negotiations, Al-Ansari stated that Qatar has already contributed numerous innovative ideas on the technical side, including memoranda of understanding. However, he stressed that the primary remaining hurdle is mustering the necessary political will.
Al-Ansari also commented on the limitations of U.S. sanctions against Iran, noting that while they impact the Iranian economy and banking sector, they have not achieved their intended diplomatic outcomes. He warned against the dangerous precedent of weaponizing waterways like the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing that such tactics threaten global energy security, food security, and international trade.
