In the Pantami District of Gombe, Nigeria, city streets are witnessing a quiet transportation shift. While petrol-powered motorcycles traditionally dominate the roads, electric bikes are gradually emerging as riders search for relief from surging fuel costs. This transition was triggered by President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove the country's petrol subsidy in May 2023, causing fuel prices to jump significantly.

Although these electric motorcycles typically cost about 1 million naira (roughly $735), placing them out of reach for many households, early adopters emphasize substantial savings on fuel and maintenance. Ayuba Abubakar, a local farmer and resident, noted that his electric bike consumes very little battery power during daily commutes around Gombe and saves him approximately 5,000 naira ($3.7) weekly in fuel expenses. Other riders, including Ahmed Aminu and Yakubu Sule, highlighted the elimination of engine oil costs and the benefit of quiet operation.

Despite these economic advantages, unreliable electricity supply presents a major challenge for broader adoption across Nigeria. Muhammad Abubakar, chief executive officer of Sustenaa, pointed out the contradiction of charging electric vehicles with fuel-powered generators. He advocates for solar-powered battery-swap stations and urges the government to lower import duties on electric-bike components, establish battery recycling standards, and integrate electric mobility into existing solar mini-grid projects.

While electric motorcycles remain a niche choice in Gombe, ongoing high fuel prices and the gradual expansion of alternative infrastructure may reshape transportation across Nigerian cities like Lagos, Kano, and Port Harcourt, offering both economic relief and reduced air pollution.
