Qatar has strongly denied allegations that it is holding Iranian pilots, dismissing the claims as "misleading" while expressing surprise at their timing amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions.

The incident dates back to the opening days of the Iran war on March 2, when Qatar announced that its air force had shot down two Iranian Su-24 bombers, marking the first such interception in the Gulf during the conflict. Majed Al Ansari, an adviser to Qatar’s prime minister and foreign ministry spokesman, stated that contact was established with the pilots after they violated Qatari airspace.

"We reaffirm that contact was established with the pilots concerned following their violation of Qatari airspace and after confirming the trajectory of the targeting," Mr Al Ansari wrote in a post on X. He added that after following the rules of engagement and attempting communication without receiving a response, necessary measures were taken to defend Qatari territory in accordance with international law.

According to Mr Al Ansari, Doha clarified the incident through official channels at the time and later deployed search-and-rescue teams to locate the pilots' remains. Qatar subsequently coordinated with Iran under international humanitarian law to arrange the handover of the remains of one pilot who was recovered. Doha also invited an Iranian team to visit Qatar in April to review details of the search operation, though Mr Al Ansari noted that Iran has not yet responded.

Meanwhile, the Iranian account directly contradicts the Qatari version of events. In a letter to the International Committee of the Red Cross, Brig Gen Mohammad Bagherzadeh, commander of Iran’s Committee for the Search for Missing Persons of the Armed Forces General Staff, alleged that three Iranian pilots survived the incident, were captured by Qatari forces, and remain in detention.

Brig Gen Bagherzadeh accused Qatar of violating the Geneva Conventions by failing to permit the pilots to communicate with their families or Iranian officials, labeling them as "prisoners of war" whose rights have been disregarded. The letter urged the Red Cross to visit the alleged detainees, check their health, and facilitate their release.

The exchange occurs as Qatar emphasizes that diplomatic channels remain active to reduce regional tensions. Iran itself faces persistent international criticism regarding arbitrary detention practices involving foreign and dual nationals.
