Fighting between Yemen’s Houthi group and pro-Saudi forces has sharply escalated, with the Houthis launching major attacks on southern Saudi Arabia that left dozens wounded and sparked fires at critical energy infrastructure. Saudi authorities confirmed strikes on several facilities, including oil installations in the south, and vowed a firm response after at least 73 people were reported injured. The renewed hostilities represent the most serious breakdown since a UN-brokered truce halted large-scale fighting in 2022.

The flare-up coincides with a broader offensive by Yemen’s internationally recognised government, which announced counteroffensives against Houthi-held positions across multiple provinces. The strategic importance of Yemen's Bab al-Mandeb Strait has intensified the conflict, particularly as Iran's restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz have forced Saudi Arabia to rely more heavily on its Red Sea export route. Houthi movements toward the western coast and the vital Red Sea shipping lanes demonstrate a clear connection between their ground offensive and maritime strategy.

Amid heavy air strikes and ground clashes reported in provinces such as Taiz, al-Jawf, al-Bayda, Marib, and Hodeidah, the humanitarian toll is mounting rapidly. The World Health Organization noted hundreds of casualties and thousands of displaced families, with analysts warning of worsening economic and humanitarian conditions as the conflict persists.
