The United Kingdom is set to introduce sanctions targeting Israel over the rapid expansion of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank under the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This move signals a major reset in diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Previewing the anticipated measures, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband stated that the sanctions are a necessary step to prevent the collapse of the two-state solution. The decision highlights a growing rift between Israel and one of its steadfast Western allies, arriving amid intense international scrutiny over West Bank policies and rising settler violence against Palestinians.

While trade between the UK and Israel totals approximately $8 billion annually, sanctions on settlement products are expected to have minimal economic impact since only a small fraction originates from the West Bank. According to the Department for Business and Trade, top UK exports to Israel include medicinal and pharmaceutical products, while top imports consist of fruits and vegetables.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog strongly criticized the move, calling it a serious error in judgment and warning against choosing the wrong side of history. He emphasized that dialogue, not sanctions, is the proper solution.

The measures could also provoke a reaction from the Trump administration. US Ambassador Mike Huckabee warned that the sanctions would undoubtedly trigger a response and could heavily impact British businesses.

The tensions coincide with Israel's advancement of the controversial E1 settlement project, which critics argue will fragment the West Bank and sever East Jerusalem from the rest of the territory. Israel’s Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, has openly championed settlement expansion to eliminate the possibility of a Palestinian state.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has strongly condemned the E1 plan as an unacceptable act that crosses a red line, demanding an immediate reversal. Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar warned that Israel will retaliate against the UK if sanctions are officially enacted.
