Recent Russian strikes targeting Ukraine have resulted in at least one fatality and seven injuries, while a Spanish jet successfully shot down a drone that crossed into Romanian airspace.
A missile and drone assault on Kryvyi Rig, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, tragically killed a woman and wounded six other individuals, according to the regional governor early on Sunday. Additionally, authorities in the Ukrainian capital reported that Kyiv faced a ballistic missile attack late on Saturday, leaving one person wounded and igniting fires at non-residential locations across the Obolonsky and Holosiivskyi districts.
In a separate development, Romania’s Defence Ministry stated on Sunday that a Spanish F-18 fighter jet pilot, operating on a NATO air policing mission to Romania, intercepted and shot down a drone that had illegally breached national airspace. This marks the fourth time a drone has been shot down in Romania this year, though Romania’s Defence Ministry did not specify the origin of the drone.
Previously, in July, a Romanian jet downed a suspected Russian drone, and in May, a stray drone collided with a building in the Romanian city of Galati, injuring two people. Sharing a 634km (394-mile) border with Ukraine, Romania has repeatedly faced Russian drones breaching its airspace as Moscow intensifies its bombing campaign targeting Ukrainian civilian and military infrastructure.
Russia has continued near-daily missile and drone operations across Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began in early 2022, frequently striking areas located far from the active front lines. The conflict has also affected key regional shipping lanes, with floating mines and unmanned sea drones discovered in the Black Sea.
According to the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission, civilian casualties in Ukraine reached their highest monthly level since 2022 this July, resulting in at least 437 deaths and 2,610 injuries.
Meanwhile, Russian authorities reported a large-scale Ukrainian drone incursion on Sunday, with Moscow officials stating they intercepted more than 100 drones heading toward the capital overnight. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that emergency services responded to various sites where debris fell, noting that three people were wounded. Ukraine continues to target military, industrial, and logistical sites deep within Russia, maintaining that these strikes are a direct response to Moscow's ongoing bombardment of Ukrainian towns and infrastructure.
