The State of Qatar has expressed its support for the United Kingdom's decision to implement a trade ban on goods originating from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. In an official statement released on Tuesday by Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs [MOFA], Doha hailed the measure as a significant step toward challenging Israel’s settlement policies.
Qatar emphasized that these policies are in direct violation of international law and relevant legitimacy resolutions, specifically citing UN Security Council Resolution 2334 and Article 8 of the Rome Statute. The statement also commended other nations joining these initiatives, viewing them as practical steps to advance the two-state solution and compel Israel to cease its expansionist activities.
The policy shift was formally announced on Tuesday by UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband at the House of Commons. Miliband stated that the UK would enforce an import ban on goods produced in illegal settlements within the occupied territories. Furthermore, the UK plans to target specific individuals and companies involved in financing, real estate, construction, and infrastructure services tied to settlement expansion.
This move aligns the UK with a broader international coalition. On Tuesday, the UK joined foreign ministers from Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden in a joint declaration announcing upcoming national and European trade restrictions on settlement goods. These countries noted that unprecedented settler violence and continuous expansion are severely undermining the viability of the two-state solution.
In response to the UK's policy and the joint international statement, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar warned that Israel would implement countermeasures. Saar stated that actions taken against Israel would not go unanswered and that the country would respond at its discretion against participating governments.
Concluding its statement, Qatar urged the wider international community to uphold its moral and legal obligations by forcing Israel to halt all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories and adhere to international law.
