Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Andre Mendonca has ordered the suspension of federal police chief Andrei Rodrigues and intelligence chief Leandro Almada, intensifying a bitter feud that threatens the credibility of the nation's highest court. The suspensions, announced on Tuesday, stem from allegations by Mendonca—who was appointed by former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro—that the officials produced six illegal reports regarding the activities of Supreme Court justices. While backed by a majority of a five-member high court panel, the decision is expected to face legal challenges from the administration of leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, potentially entangling the government in a high-stakes political conflict ahead of the October presidential election.

“Investigating possible evidence of crimes is correct,” stated Institutional Relations Minister Jose Guimaraes, a key aide to Lula, in a social media response to the ruling. “But this measure smells electoral to me. That cannot happen.” Recent polls indicate a tight race between Lula and Jair Bolsonaro’s eldest son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, leading up to the initial round of voting on October 4.

The Supreme Court has faced mounting tension following mutual accusations of misconduct exchanged between Justice Alexandre de Moraes, an appointee of centre-right President Michel Temer, and Mendonca. De Moraes has frequently drawn criticism from right-wing figures, particularly after overseeing the legal proceedings against Jair Bolsonaro for a coup plot following the 2022 election. Last week, Mendonca made public a report detailing alleged connections between de Moraes and disgraced banker Daniel Vorcaro. In response, de Moraes accused Mendonca of abusing his power, referencing federal police intelligence reports and calling for a formal court investigation into his actions, which Mendonca has now countered by questioning their legality.

The ongoing Vorcaro corruption scandal has steadily expanded to implicate influential political figures across both the left and right. Daniel Vorcaro was arrested in 2025 over allegations that he masterminded one of the largest bank fraud schemes in Brazilian history, resulting in billions of dollars in unpaid debt. Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has also faced intense scrutiny over his association with Vorcaro, whom he approached for financial backing to produce a film about his father, Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence. Utilizing Tuesday’s suspension to reiterate his claims, the right-wing senator labeled the prosecution of his father a political “witch-hunt.” The Federal Police had formally recommended charges against the elder Bolsonaro in November 2024.

“Lula’s special group in the Federal Police officially unmasked,” Senator Flavio Bolsonaro posted on social media. “May the honourable and glorious Federal Police regain its autonomy to go after criminals, and not Lula’s political adversaries.” In defense of the agency, William Marcel Murad, the federal police’s executive director, issued a statement affirming that Rodrigues retains the agency’s “full confidence” and emphasizing that its agents “will not be shaken by attacks.”
